Katharina Berndt

Katharina Berndt is an illustrator, i.e., her artistic medium is the line and the significance of contour. The marvellous creatures emerging from her interplay of the layout of lines and the surface are like picture puzzles, open to a variety of interpretations.

Her method takes its cue from freehand drawing, and the arbitrary, the random, has a special value in the development of the line structure. But the distinguishing feature of Katharina Berndt’s works is the construction of a solid form in their aesthetic context.

Since 2009 Katharina Berndt has presented her drawings not only in printed form, but also in large-scale projections. Light projection permits monumental size and reinforces the moment of transparency and movement. The puzzling diversity in the direction of the individual elements jumbles up our accustomed way of seeing things. When projected, the black & white interplay of the drawing becomes interplay between illumination and concealment accompanied by a unique spatial depth.

LichtRouten Piece: The Never-Ending Story
Katharina Berndt takes graphic elements of the façade and creates visual narrations that can be read as organic developments. From wherever the observer approaches the picture’s depicted scenario, moving in different visual directions will always reveal new correlations within the picture. The two-dimensional black-&-white drawings resemble picture puzzles where the interplay of the line and surface arrangement allow for multiple interpretations.
