Thorbjørn Lausten develops artistic strategies at the interfaces where science, information technology, media and art intersect. He researches aesthetic strategies for visual analysis methods in dealing with data and information by creating visual systems as tools for the depiction of digital information. In the process, he also contemplates the semantic neighbourhoods in analogue and digital culture, both of which rely fully on the phenomenon of light as the original medium.
It is not only technical aspects that play an essential role in the performance of this transfer; the contents are also subjected to new contemplation processes that are inherent to new media. His installations depict data in digital systems as sculptures.
+ Background: The objective of interdisciplinary approaches in science is the creation of continuity between the preparation and the presentation of the data at hand. This requires collaboration between scientists and image generators. Tools have to be developed which use a common visual language for investigation and depiction and which can accommodate the ambiguity and complexity that are part and parcel of the reality of scientific correlations.
